Workshop on Energy

Greenhouse Gases & Environment

6-8 October 2008
Porto, Portugal

These eclectic plates and notes were prepared for the students of Fernando Pessoa University (Porto, Portugal). They should not be considered as a textbook and much less as a scientific paper. The criticism adopted in these notes is "ad rem" (towards the facts) and not "ad hominem" (against persons). Solely the authors are responsible for the ideas and comments depicted and expressed below. Our main aim is remind the students that the "greens" (environmentalist movement), as well as the present Portuguese governance, has views on "global warming" too dogmatic and probably too full of errors. Except Czech President Vaclav Klaus, the majority of European Governments, and media, are alarmist and irresponsible on "global warming", which they consider as anthropogenic. In fact, they pretend that they do not know that "global warming" is refuted by a lot of scientific hypotheses (falsifiable conjectures) and use it as a political panacea.

Preface :

You have heard plenty about “Climate Change” and “Global Warming”. Climate Changes exist since the Earth’s birth. Global Warming is just the increase in average measured temperature of the Earth’s near-surface and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. The projected continuation (modelling prediction) of “Global warming” is defended by the “Alarmists”, but it is denied by a lot of scientists (the “Skeptics” or “Deniers”). For the “Alarmists”, who are committed to a Global Warming creed, global warming is anthropogenic and a worldwide deindustrialization (economic decreasing) is absolutely necessary to save the Earth. The global warming skeptics, who often are considered as henchmen of the oil companies, may reject all, some or only one believe of the “Alarmists”. For them, global warmings and coolings are nothing unusual in Earth's history. They are not catastrophic (particularly the warmings). They are just natural climate changes, in which human activity is meaningless.
