Indonesia Offshore

South Java Offshore

This Canvas autotrace of a regional seismic line of the South Java offshore illustrates the overriding lithospheric plate of the B-type subduction zone defined between the plunging Australian plate and the overriding Sunda plate, which, presently, the majority of the geoscientists consider independent of the Eurasia plate. In fact, it looks the Sunda plate is moving eastward relatively to the Eurasia at ± 10 mm per year. Comparing this tentative interpretation with the geological model of an idealized B-Type subduction zone illustrated on Page 44, just the volcanic arc in not visible in this autotrace, since the oceanic crust of the plunging plate, as well as, in the overriding plate, the accretionary wedge, two forearc basins and the continental crust are easily recognized.
